inverarnan – 14 miles for solo walkers there will be a single supplement of £25.00 per night. the west highland way view our west highland way gallery here. the west highland way was opened on october 6th 1980 and became the first officially designated footpath in scotland. this scottish walk is 96 miles long and runs from milngavie (north of glasgow) to fort william in the scottish highlands. it is the most popular walk in scotland with its outstanding scenery. the path is traditionally walked from south to north. as well as increasing the sense of adventure, taking the route in this direction keeps the sun from one’s eyes. section 1: milngavie – drymen 12 miles the path officially starts in milngavie town centre, where a granite obelisk is located. most walkers arrive at the nearby railway station. milngavie is a town on the northern fringe of the conurbation of glasgow. the path passes mugdock castle and mugdock country park before emerging into open countryside, and the campsie fells can be seen. by the west side of craigallian loch the path passes a small monument to commemorate the craigallian fire, an important historical symbol for outdoor activities in scotland. as the way approaches the campsies by the piece of ground known as tinkers loan, there is an opportunity to explore adjacent hills such as dumgoyne or the small but heavily wooded dumgoyach. finally the way reaches the village of drymen. section 2: drymen – balmaha 8 miles after leaving drymen the path enters garadhban forest before reaching the first major summit of the route, conic hill at 361 m (1,184 ft), though the route does not require you to ascend to the summit. the village of balmaha on the eastern shore of loch lomond is the next settlement reached. section 3: balmaha – rowardennan 7 miles the path heads north along the eastern shore of loch lomond, passing through rowardennan forest before reaching the village ofrowardennan. section 4: rowardennan – inversnaid 7 miles this stretch is mostly forestry track following the eastern shore of loch lomond with occasional diversions onto a rocky path with crags and boulders. section 5: inversnaid – ardlui/inverarnan 12/14 miles this is by far the roughest section of the way, where the path makes a tortuous route along the side of loch lomond with many ups and downs. a hard walk but the scenery is superb.if walking to ardlui you would get the ferry from ardleish to take you over to the other side of loch lomond to ardlui hotel. section 6: ardlui/inverarnan – crianlarich 6/8 miles the path and tracks are mainly well-surfaced, much of the way consists of an old military road. moderate ascents and decents. the way bypasses crianlarich to the west, but a spur path leads into the village, the halfway point on the route. section 7: crianlarich – tyndrum 6 miles good paths and tracks with some moderate ascent and descent, but nothing unduly difficult and nowhere far from services. a straightforward day of glen and low pass walking amid outstanding mountain scenery. section 8: tyndrum – bridge of orchy/inveroran 8/10 miles again good paths and tracks the scenery is some what breath taking and now on military roads you will be fast going. once you reach bridge of orchy, a small village and also used as an overnight stop. there is a steep climb as you leave bridge of orchy, with amazing views you then have a short descent which brings you to the inveroran hotel. section 9: inveroran – kings house 10 miles the surface is mainly good underfoot but on rannoch moor you are highly exposed in bad weather. there is no shelter of any kind available until you reach the white corries ski centre. the scenery is spectacular but if conditions are poor, this can be a very tough stage of the way. glencoe is often considered one of the most spectacular and beautiful places in scotland, and is a part of the designated national scenic area of ben nevis and glencoe. the narrow glen shows a dramatically grim grandeur, shut in on both sides by wild and precipitous mountains. section 10: kings house – kinlochleven 9 miles the surfaces are mainly good but you are very highly exposed. at its highest point you are at 550m before a long descent down to kinlochleven, although short it’s still a hard stage in bad weather. section 11: kinlochleven – fort william 16 miles very good paths at this last stage, there is a steep climb out of kinlochleven, then there are no more serious gradients. the path through nevis forest is a bit rough, then onto some tarmac descending into fort william.
